Agricultural Development for Nutrition and Entrepreneurship in Burundi

PADANE is a multi-year initiative designed to improve food and nutrition security and drive inclusive agri-business development across seven provinces of Burundi — strengthening livelihoods for smallholder farmers, women, and youth.

About the Project

A consortium-led response to Burundi's rural development needs

Coordinated by SNV Burundi and implemented through a partnership of national and international actors.

Projet d'Appui au Développement Agricole pour la Nutrition et l'Entrepreneuriat

Challenges Addressed

Tackling interlinked rural challenges

PADANE is structured to respond to a set of related constraints faced by rural households in Burundi.

Food & Nutrition Insecurity

Many rural households face limited and irregular access to nutritious food, affecting wellbeing and productivity.

Low Household Incomes

Smallholder farmers operate with limited productivity, market access, and value-addition opportunities.

Limited Jobs for Youth & Women

Sustainable employment opportunities for women and young people remain scarce in rural areas.

Climate Vulnerability

Farming systems are exposed to climate risks that undermine resilience and long-term productivity.

Project Objectives

Four interconnected goals

The project pursues outcomes that reinforce each other across income, employment, nutrition, and resilience.

Increase Household Incomes

Strengthen agricultural productivity and market participation to raise incomes for rural households.

Create Sustainable Jobs for Youth & Women

Develop pathways to self-employment and inclusive jobs across the agricultural value chains.

Enhance Food & Nutrition Security

Improve dietary diversity and food access at the household level through integrated interventions.

Strengthen Climate Resilience

Equip households and farming systems to better withstand and adapt to climate change.

Strategic Approach

Five core pillars and cross-cutting themes

PADANE's approach combines value-chain development, finance, employment, and innovation, supported by inclusion-focused themes.

Inclusive Value Chains

Strengthening agricultural value chains so they generate value and opportunities for all participants.

Food & Nutrition Security

Improving the availability, access, and consumption of nutritious foods at household level.

Youth & Women Employment

Creating sustainable employment and self-employment opportunities for women and young people.

Access to Finance

Improving smallholders' and entrepreneurs' access to financial services and tools.

Innovation Fund

Supporting innovation in agri-business and rural development through dedicated funding.
